When you think of Daytona, FL, sun, surf, stunt fest and cheerleading competitions might come to mind. Soon, that association will also include Daytona Xtreme Allstars. Brand new to the all-star circuit, owner Trish McKenney has high hopes for the program. After taking a look at her 12,500-square-foot facility just outside the popular vacation destination, Daytona Xtreme seems to be getting off to a sunny start.
With two daughters heavily involved in all-star cheerleading, McKenney spent more than a year driving two-plus hours to Orlando so her kids could attend acheer gym there. The commute became too much for the family, and that’s when the cheer mom decided to open her own gym. “There’s a real shortage of cheer gyms in East Volusia County,” she says. “We really needed another option for the kids who wanted to cheer in this area.”
After talking to parents, athletes, coaches and other industry professionals, McKenney came up with a plan for what she saw as the ideal gym. This included starting from scratch in designing her facility and putting in a lot of long hours to get it done. She even put her daughters to work; her youngest splash-painted the snack bar and her middle daughter decorated the sibling area with colorful stars. McKenney even left it up to them to choose the program’s colors: lime green, aqua and white.
By the time the gym opened its doors in March 2010, they’d managed to create a fully working cheerleading facility, complete with two cheer floors, tumbling tracks, a full-service snack bar and an athlete lounge. “One of my favorite features is our parent viewing area,” says McKenney. “We put down tan carpet and decorated it in our gym colors. We added Adirondack chairs to give it a beachy look.”
Less than six months after opening, Daytona Xtreme is growing in rapid popularity, the phone ringing every day with new customers. McKenney says this is due to her focus on keeping athletes at the appropriate skill levels based on their abilities. Through her years as a cheer mom, she’s also realized how important it is to treat your athletes and parents fairly and with respect. “We believe that kids don’t have to be screamed at or belittled to get great results.”
